After having fought for years through Jazztel and Ya.com to end Telefonica’s monopoly and to reach the so-called liberalization of telecommunications in Spain, it ends up that now with FON I have found another monopoly in which not even Telefonica has a chance: the Airports in Spain.

You Scratch My Back And I Scratch Yours
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
Jason Goodman told me that he sees FON as an organization based on the principle “you scratch my back and I scratch yours”. Today I saw this in action.
These women are writing the FONero promise in order to get a free Fonera. But look how they do it, as our stand at SIMO, Spain´s largest tech fair is a mob scene and there´s nowhere to write, they write on each other´s back. Very FON.

Leo Was Born Con Un Pan Bajo El Brazo
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
We are back home. Leo, his Mom, his siblings, my mother in law (yes, her as well…) and, in the middle of all this, I remember that I have another child…..FON. So I do what I always do when I want to know what´s happening at FON. I go to the Statcounters that show me sales in the FON shops around the world, and I see the great news that, indeed, Leo was born with a pan bajo el brazo, with a loave of bread under his arm.
Today is shaping up as the day ever for the Movimiento FON. We are growing like crazy all over the planet. Korea, China, Germany, Spain, Italy, and even US, which has been our slowest market so far, is beginning to pick up. So I guess there´s no need for me to go to the office! Leo, I´m staying home….

Leo Has Mail…
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in New Ideas with No Comments
Today I got Leo, our newborn an e mail address. I know this sounds crazy, as he is only 46 hours old as I post this. But trust me, there´s a plan here. This morning I started writing to Leo to his new e mail address. I sent him a link to this blog in Spanish and English with all the beautiful congratulatory messages he got. I forwarded copies of the celebration e mails that I got directly. I also sent him videos and pictures of his birth and first 48 hours. And during his life, whenever I feel like it, I will send him e mails.

FON Receives The World Technology Award 2006!
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
This has been a weekend of good news for me, personally and professionally. Earlier this weekend, on Friday night, James P. Clark (Chairman of the World Technology Network) and Daniel Sieberg (Host of “Next@CNN TV show), announced in San Francisco that FON has won the award in the category “Communications Technology – Corporate”. The World Technology Award goes each year to the most innovative people and organizations in the science and technology world.
Given that my son Leo was born I could not be there personally to represent FON, but we are very proud at FON to receive this distinction that goes to all the people who are working so hard every day to make FON the largest WiFi network in the world by far!

GigaOm Tells Of Our Purchase Of GSPACE
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
We bought Gspace from Rahul Jonna, its developer. But because of Leo´s birth, I don´t have time to blog the whole story so I communicated with Om Malik who, after congratulating me for the birth of my forth child (and enquiring if I was on my way to build a sports team;), kindly volunteer to blog the story.
Thanks Om for sharing the story of our purchase and our plans to integrate Gspace with the FON Liberator with the blogging community.
Even though FON is less than a year old, we have offices in China, Korea, Japan, Netherlands, France, Sweden, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK and US. We also deliver our Foneras in all of the EU. But if you live in a country where we cannot ship Foneras to, we recommend that either you buy one and have it shipped to a friend in a country where we can ship to, or if you or a friend show up in person to a FON office anywhere in the world and simply show your passport and a ticket that proves that you are going to a destination that we can´t ship to. We will trust you as a FONero and give you 3 Foneras for free to take to your country.
Example, you are a Chilean who travels to San Francisco, you are a Malaysian in Hong Kong, you are a Senegalese in Paris, an Argentine in Madrid, etc. Just come to our offices and you will get up to 3 Foneras to take with you back home and start spreading the FON Movement. If you have any questions about this promo pls write to Nina. We have already implemented this with Latin Americans who come to Madrid.

Viva Yat Siu and the Hong Kong FONero Team!
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
Yesterday we launched in Hong Kong. First my apologies to the people of Hong Kong. I am really sorry I was not there for the FON party, but my wife is due any moment now and my fourth child should be born this week, so I could not attend. I hope you understand.
Second, I want to congratulate Yat Siu and his team. Guys you did an AMAZING job. Bravo! What follows are links to pictures of the event and news coverage. If you have any more links, please send them to me and I will publish them.
