I am definetely not following your statement about Ubuntu as “Microsoft that works well”. Fortunately, HIG guidelines and other premises followed by GNOME and Ubuntu have turned the complete user experience into EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE, avoiding compulsory-configuration and excessive user interaction.
I could probably see Gnome Linux as an interface nearer OSX, but without Apple’s solelymerchandised and exclusiveforthesakeofstableandnicelydesigned policies.
The software you can’t still fully enjoy at Linux, is due to proprietary lack of interest on POSIX platforms.

I’ve used Ubuntu for internet terminals at work. You wouldn’t believe how easy it is for people who have no idea what Linux is to use. It has the added benefit of running non-stop without my involvement. If these terminals were left with Windows, in a week I would have spyware infested messes on my hands. Case in point, I will still find .EXE’s on the desktops of the Ubuntu machines which people have tried to install. 7.04 is the greatest version yet, very solid, at least for me. With more and more people using just the internet when on a computer, the OS choice is less and less difficult to make. Firefox is more compatible with more sites then ever before, and your web experience doesn’t change with your OS. If you can have a more stable desktop environment, and still get what you need done, go for it. The trick always comes when someone who doesn’t understand computers, and uses Linux, goes to Best Buy to buy the latest tax software, and is upset that it doesn’t work on his or her desktop. Linux as a desktop is getting better all the time, I can’t wait to see further innovations.
