Chumby
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
WiFI usage grows in surprising ways. Pixelydixel a Spanish blog alerted me to this new development, the Chumby. I loved it. Basically the Chumby is a WiFi device that comes to life when you make it do whatever it is that you would like it to do. It is the 21st century answer to the alarm clock. I wonder if we could get a Chumby version that also has our chipset in it and is both a Chumby and a FON social router.

Chumby is a great little gadget, but making a FON router Chumby, is well… a bit chubby 🙂
What would be nice (if and when Chumby is available) is to make it easy to use FON routers as Chumby Hubs. For example, I could set up 2 or 3 Chumbys at home so that I can page one another, or use them as an intercom… or maybe something more creative.

The problem with using a Chumby at a FON hotspot is that it would have to have a compatible web browser on it in order to negotiate the login page. Most small wireless mobile/PDA devices are unable to do this, and the fon login page is picky about what browser you use, too. Fon chooses not to make a simplified mobile/PDA version of the login page, either!
