An Atheist in the Woods
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in General with No Comments
My relative Benjamin Varsavsky (or Warshavsky because he changed our last name to what he insists is the original form) lives in the Netherlands. He is an MD, an avid computer, a young 85 and, I thought, a convinced Atheist. I say I thought so because he just sent me this story that confused me.
AN ATHEIST IN THE WOODS.
An atheist was walking through the woods. ’What majestic trees! What powerful rivers! What beautiful animals!’ he said to himself. As he was walking alongside the river, he heard a rustling in the bushes behind him. He turned to look and saw a 7-foot grizzly bear charging towards him. He ran as fast as he could up the path, looked over his shoulder and saw the bear was closing in on him, looked again, and the bear was even closer. He tripped and fell on the ground. He rolled over to pick himself up but saw that the bear was right on top of him, reaching for him with his left paw and raising his right paw to strike him. At that instant the atheist cried out, ’Oh my God!’
Time stopped. The bear froze. The forest was silent. As a bright light shone upon the man, a voice came out of the sky. ’You deny my existence for all these years, teach others I don’t exist and even credit creation to cosmic accident. Do you expect me to help you out of this predicament? Am I to count you as a believer?’ The atheist looked directly into the light.
“‘It would be hypocritical of me to suddenly ask you to treat me as a Christian now, but perhaps you could make the BEAR a Christian?” ’Very well,’ said the voice. The light went out. The sounds of the forest resumed. And the bear dropped his right paw, brought both paws together, bowed his head and spoke:
“Lord bless this food, which I am about to receive from thy bounty through Christ our Lord, Amen.”

It’s a joke. I’ve heard it before.
And the atheist remains as atheist.

That god is a sadist one.

Yes, it is just a joke. Your relative is undoubtedly an atheist and one with a sense of humor.
The bear observes the proper procedure for eating his meal (saying grace beforehand), but takes no mercy. Christianity (or any religion) is all about the scripture and conformity to religious dogma, not the notion of goodwill.
Christians are concerned with the ‘letter of the law’ rather than the ‘spirit of the law’. Catholics, especially, will commit a sin, go to confession, and pretend it’s all ok.

I wonder how it is possible that in XXI century, in 2009 year. When we have some many ways to learn, study. How it is possible that in todays world where EVERY information is almost in a hand, people can be atheist or not belive in Jesus. I can understund that like 500 years ago people can be stupid and blind, but now ? been atheis or not belive on what happends 2009 years ago it is like still belive that Earth is flat.

martiger:
…seriously? or are you being sarcastic? Please enlighten me as to what I should study and learn so as to believe in Jesus Christ.

*Paul Pick-Aluas I will suggest study history, since Jewish nation was born till …. yesterday. U will find answers for yourself.

My friend, I have studied history and quite extensively. I am asking you to provide me with just one example–a single passage in a book perhaps–since you claim the evidence is everywhere. It’s not that I don’t believe in Jesus. I believe that Jesus was a man that came into this world as a result of the primal, carnal instincts of his mother and father. Take you for example: your mother and father at some point decided to get it on, for whatever reason and under whatever circumstances. And now, here you are: preaching to the world. I did not need to look far to find the answers.

Martiger, Jesus Christ was definitely a man who was born a little more than 2009 years ago, but he was a man and nothing else… I understand many people dislike atheists because they are a little more preachy with their beliefs than others, but we don’t like it when you preach your beliefs either. It is possible to argue both for or against the existence of god, therefore, do not call people who do not share your beliefs “stupid and blind.” In addition, the belief in god has been, and will most likely be one of the common mysteries of life far into the future and as such is in NO WAY, similar to believing that the earth is flat… The earth being round is a proven fact, whereas you cannot disprove or prove god. If it is a theological argument you want, go ahead and state the evidence you have….

EDIT: instead of “mysteries” i meant to write “dilemmas”
