Digital divide? News divide!

I am going from NYC to the Hamptons. I just stopped at three convenience stores and none of them carried the New York Times nor the Wall Street Journal, nor Business Week, Forbes, Fortune…
What they did have was a wide selection of gossip, car and soft porn mags.
America is a class society less in terms of income than in terms of education.

Magazines are prefer subscribers here in usa not grocery stores. Most of the usa magazines are not avivable at almost every store. In a Chicago all i know is just ONE magazine store which have more than 50 titles. And its place in downtown Chicago. I do subscribe 7 magazines, dont even know whats on stores 🙂 doesnt mean that ” …America is a class society less in terms of income than in terms of education.” ( joke )

The New York Times is a daily newspaper not a magazine. So it is the The Wall Street Journal.
So martiger what you are saying is that in the States I can’t read The Wall Street Journal once in a while and the only why read that newspaper is to subscribe the whole shebangs?
This creates quite a economical barrier to information. Don’t you think?

I didn’t know they sold newspapers in /stores/ in the USA?
I found them in “newspaper” devices on each corner of the street ?

It’s very likely that the convenience stores you stopped at were sold out of the NYTimes and WSJ. Generally convenience stores only get a handful of copies of newspapers since they are a daily perishable product that they don’t want to have piling up, so they will generally be sold out in the morning as commuters stop by on their way to work. It would be highly unlikely to find a stack of newspapers for sale in a convenience store after the morning rush hour is over.
Regarding the magazines, in the U.S., business magazines aren’t typically sold in convenience stores or supermarkets but on newstands and at bookstores.

To those who don´t believe that in Queens I found a completely different set of magazines and newspapers arguably of much lower quality and targeted to a poorly educated public please take the Queensborogh bridge and immediately after you get off on your right you will see these magazine newstands/deli type of shops. Enter any of those.
I lived in NYC for 18 years. I know what I am talking about. There is a large educational divide in this city. Moreover today I was with my daughter Alexa helping her move in at Columbia University and you could see the young kids who worked for the moving companies and the incoming class side by side. The differences in choice of vocabulary were striking.

Does that explain why they sell Newsay, but not the New York Times? Does that explain why they sold at least 50 different magazine titles?
