I built two companies who competed with Telefonica in the DSL business.  Jazztel and Ya.com.  In both companies we had a very hard time competing with Telefonica because Telefonica owns media and in general favors whatever government runs Spain so governments ally with the former monopoly and not the consumer.  But the European Commission finally listened to us and gave Telefónica a 150 million euro fine.  Let´s see what happens though.  My fear is that Telefonica will find a way to use its local influence not to pay it.  The proof is that this bad news has not had any effect on its stock price.

What shock me is that the regulatory authority (CMT) approved the wholesale price for resellers (i.e. Jazztel) and now the UE Commision has contradicted it. I agree with you: The thing is that Telecoms Regulators in Spain are leading by people who worked in Telefónica and probably they are stakeholders.

Not that “gigantic”; it’s like a person who makes 25.000 Eur a year is fined 72 Eur.
And telefonica has appealed.

no se puede sintetizar mejor en una frase el por qué telefónica sigue siendo líder abrumador de mercado

Are you trying to find a valid excuse to justify your runaway of both companies?

You should recognize that you know how to create new companies, but have no idea of how to manage them.

I tried changing to ya.com this winter, but ended up without any internet connection at all for almost two months because Telefonica had to ok my move and provide my number and in the end it was just easier to stay with them (although part of those two months was waiting to be reconnected because I had committed the sin of wanting to leave). Very frustrating and inconvenient. Well, but there are worse things in life!

John Russel,

I have sold or left 7 companies, not 2.
