When I first bought my farm in Jose Ignacio, Uruguay, in the late 80s, this place was a fishing/farming village with around 40 homes. Now it´s grown to 400 homes. Jose Ignacio is still pretty undeveloped by Northern Hemisphere standards, but the few who come here seem to be pretty successful people from Europe and the States.

My next door neighbor is Michael Eisner, Ralph Lauren is nearby, somebody told me that Martin Amis was also here. Not long ago nobody who did not speak Spanish would come here. Ok, maybe some Brazilians, but that was it.

Personally, it´s not that i am so happy that Jose Ignacio has began to attract global personalities, as for me it used to be my hideaway, but it is still newsworthy to me how this mostly uneventful town can become such a global magnet. Indeed, sites like A Small World are buzzing with parties in Jose Ignacio and Punta del Este.

The real test of civilization is have they paved the road between Jose Ignacio & Punta since we visited you?

The newest addition to José Ingacio, scheduled to open late this year, is the Setai Club – sister property to the Miami Beach hotel of the same name whose club members, including Lenny Kravitz and Heidi Klum.

Martin,

Sounds great that Jose Ignacio and Punta del Este are showing as niche-targeted. I know that many things changed there in the last 10 years. A friend of mine just built a Home one block away from the FARO and the local police (prefectura) was building a 3-story home just in fron of my friend’s house.

When new people from out-of-town arrive to Jose Ignacio, things do not happend in a positive way. I believe it is very difficult to stop this affluency of rich & famous…you should see how Laguna Garzón is also growing so fast!

Enjoy my beautiful country!!! I was in Jose Ignacio the last days of December and assisted to the Lacoste party at La Huella. What a great place!

Regards,

Marcelo
