My iPhone is now a PocketMac

Thanks to Víctor and Albert, who work at Fon Labs, I was able to unlock my iPhone. The outcome has been great. Never mind the fact that I can use the iPhone now with any operator in the world. That is little compared to the fact that now I can download all sort of apps, games, that I can finally turn the iPhone into a product of my choice. I wonder if Apple knew all along that hackers would liberate the rigid structure of the iPhone into a wonderful, pocket Mac.

Its great to see that you can unlock such a powerful device…
Do you have a link where we can see how to unlock it?
Can you use the software that you use in your desktop mac (Skype for example)?

I still can’t make up my mind whether to get an iPhone or an HTC TyTN II, which seems so cool. Of course I am a Mac user since 1984… but I can get along with Windows too. If anything, your video has steered me towards the iPhone again. Still, the new HTC does 3G now instead of next year, and doesn’t need to be hacked to install applications or switch networks (can be bought unlocked).

I’m sure Steve Jobs was aware that people might hack the iPhone but I don’t think he was prepared for the speed at which it was done. Jobs made an interesting comment at the UK iPhone launch when quizzed about the US unlocking efforts. “[P]eople are going to try and break in and it’s our job to try and stop them.”
Maybe he just said this because the CEO of O2 UK was sitting next to him but even so, I’d be wary of running iPhone updates until people have verified that it doesn’t break the unlock.

Good to hear! I am very surprised that Apple has receive dso little criticism for locking their iPhone to one operator in each country, and forcing users into long-term contracts. Why are Apple getting away with this? So hacker efforts like this will hopefully show both Apple and the users that freddom is better!

Out of sheer curiosity and apparent lack of enough information, isn’t unlocking the iPhone, technically, illegal ? even if it is across U.S. waters ?

I recall a few weeks ago that you said you would not replace your stolen iPhone for a number of key reasons (see the “My iPhone was stolen and I aint getting another one ” link below 😉 which were beyond the unlocking issue.
So now that your iPhone is unlocked it does not hang anymore ?
I was about to get an iPhone and changed mind after I read how dumb it was on your blog and I was ready to wait for the next generation, so before I go get the iPhone, are you really sure it is as cool as it gets 🙂
By the way, if you know someone who knows someone etc… who could invited me on dopplr, it would be much appreciated.

Hello Martin,
Now you’ve joined the world of hacked iPhones, you can install Devicescape Connect and get automatic login to FON hotspots (and hundreds of others too). If you have the Nullriver Installer on your phone, we’re right there in the package list 🙂

Martin,
It seems that you invented the first real mobile PC. We’ve heard a lot in the past about the “pocket” PCs. Now it is real, thanks to Fon Labs and Steve Jobs.
