Aphrodite is being painted right now in Barcelona. Assuming it all goes well she will leave Barcelona Nov 1st and be in Barbados around Dec 10th. Stops will be Gibraltar and Canaries a day each for provisioning. Last time Aphrodite did Canaries, Barbados in only 12 days. I am not doing the crossing myself but I am putting together a crew to do it. Nina and I will sail around St Barths between Dec 15th and Dec 28th. So far I have one professional sailor who has been on Aphrodite for a year. His name is Hernan Prado. This is a good blog post of his in Spanish describing his experience on Aphrodite. So I am recruiting 4 or 5 more crew members who can stay a minimum of 45 days and more if possible. I pay for all the expenses. Amateur crew members have to pay their transportation to Aphrodite and from Aphrodite when they disembark, that´s all. I already tweeted this and got many proposals of which two look like candidates who qualify and who are available. There is also the possibility of doing the return in April.
Here are some pictures of 92ft Ketch Aphrodite designed by Andre Hoek and built by Vitters.

What do you consider an amateur crew member? Can you recruit a crew member with no sailing experience? Where does one apply? Best =)

Dear Martin, as Raul Moreno asked: What are the requirements as an amateuer? 🙂
And by the way: you had a beautiful video on your blog from a past transatlantic turn, featuring the Aphrodite and some excellent music – where is it gone?
Best regards, Caspar

I already got many replies and I want to thank people for sending them. An amateur is a non professional who wants to spend a month, 45 days on a boat because he loves sailing, maybe owns a smaller sailboat and sails the Med and wants to cross the Ocean. But we will not take people who don´t have sailing experience.

Hi Martin, I´ve been saling since almost 15 years, race regattas PHRF and O.R.C Club formulas in a 27 and 41 feet sailing boats respectively, at least twice a month. I raced Buenos Aires Punta del Este many times and also sailed in the BVI´s on holidays. I also sailed in Sydney and Auckland while I stood there some years ago.
How do you qualify to your adventure?

Hi Martin,
I’m catalan and living in Barcelona. I’ve been sailing for a long time, always at the Med (Corsica, Sardinia, Balears, etc).
I’m mechanical engineer, but actually without work, and I cannot imagine a better positive input, than sailing on this incredible Aphrodite.
I also have the spanish sailing title called ‘Capitan de Yate de Recreo’.
Maybe I can meet Hernan Prado in Barcelona ?
Regards,
Miquel

I’m Aphrodite’s skipper.
Thanks to all who applied for this opportunity. I have now finalised the crew selection for this crossing so any further enquiries should be from those wishing to join us for the return voyage to Europe commencing around May 2010.
