Christiane Zu Salm leads Fon in Germany
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
Ok, she is gorgeous. But this posting is not about that.
This posting is about how lucky we are at FON, to have Christiane turning Germany into a WiFi nation.
Christiane is the first Fonera Leader who does not strictly come from the internet. She comes from the world of television where she broke all the rules and came out ahead. Christiane to me symbolizes the true entrepreneur who combines original thinking with a strong strategic instinct and great comunication skills. We are SUPER happy and proud to have Christiane with us.

That is nevertheless a placement error without example, http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christiane_zu_Salm. The wolf in the sheep fur. That is probably because of the fact that one does not know the television station “9live” outside from Germany. The television station is despised in Germany and forbidden in Switzerland. For the Fon movement that is very counter productive. Who wants to have something do with a movement, with which the chief has one past with doubtful television station and its partner is a boss of “premiere”, a pay-tv station. That does not fit.

Jens,
1. the interactive TV channel 9Live is, as a fact, the most successful innovation in the European TV industry and is being copied now by 50% of all other TV stations in Germany, has conquered the UK where ITV and Channel 4 have both dedicated two channels to this business model and is soon to be started in other countries like Spain, Italy and Poland.
It´s all about change in TV as it is elsewhere in the media. Fon is about change, about breaking the rules – here is the fit!
By the rest of the industry, Christiane is being perceived as an engine of change…
2. Georg and Premiere: Georg Kofler is the single most successful TV entrepreneur in Germany, he has founded more than 10 Free-TV stations (all of which are highly profitable) and now turned Premiere around (which has been the most challenging turnaround in the German TV industry).
Why should that hurt Fon?
If at all involved, it could rather help Fon…imagine we would offer the 3,5 million subscribers of Premiere Fon…

Well Martin, maybe you get this posting because for outsiders FON looks very much like a kind of ‘open minded change the world’ project. It sounds *really* nice like: “Become part, share, and get access everywhere”. -WOW !
Not mentioned that in the very end the whole thing is set up to make really big money – the pepole you work with make this obvious.
You build a high speed data/voice/location based network almost for nothing because you convince people to open their networks to FON. That’s it.
Important for you will be that these people do not feel ripped of…
And… that the (german) law will change: Because right now the folks who open up their line to others can be fined in case of abuse even through others…
Hasta luego.

Kai, Fon is investing heavily in all this. We are buying routers at 50 and selling them at 25, sometimes for even less. We are investing in software, systems, supporting open source projects and creating a network that is free for foneros and only paid by people who are donors. Kai, what do you prefer, to pay Vodafone for 3G or to share some bandwidth and roam the world for free. Kai, do you think every time you goole that Larry and Sergey make more money or do you search and find what you are looking for? Kai, I would prefer that instead of focusing in whether we will make money or not, which we hope indeed to finally make some you should think if the proposal of sharing a little bandwidth and roam the world for free makes sense for you or not.
Kai on June 14, 2006 ·
Martin, I agree with you. I like the idea of sharing resources with others *very* much.
But I do feel a bit uncomfortable if the main focus, the only target, is or becomes to earn money. To be clear: I like to earn money! – But projects that are initiated to make the big thing become userunfriendly very fast – yes look at google!
The thing that enoys me very much is that your fonero.com does look like some kind of ‘indi weeni peeni startup open source save the world thing’. But even that is not true, the WIFI allover thing is only the tool to become rich. That’s all I said. Take it or not, maybe it is senseless to discuss it… I don’T know…
cheers

Kai,
We want you as a fonero, but if you don´t want to be one we understand that as well. Whatever makes you feel comfortable.

Jason,
Christiane´s background is indeed not very internet, not very linux either. But Christiane is a genius at popularizing trends and FON needs massive adoption to be successful.

@ Martin Varsawsky,
I agree with you as far as it goes with the thought of interdisciplinary strategies and skills of Ms. Christiane zu Salm.
When a KIS (keep it simple) concept like the concept of FON is supposed to change the connectivity of a whole generation, interdisciplinary strategies and competence is a key factor for success.
