World Premiere of the Fontenna
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in Fon with No Comments
FON will introduce the Fontennas in early May (we still don’t have the exact date). I have personally tested the Fontennas and my estimate is that they increase the effective range of the La Foneras by a factor of 5 to 10 (think that range in the 3D world of our cities is 3 dimensional). I tested the La Foneras in the Place des Vosges in Paris where we have an apartment. With a La Fonera I could cover 1/8 of the park while with the Fontenna I could 7/8 of it (areas with trees interfered with the signal). In this video I show the Fontennas for the first time. Fontennas will probably sell for 9,95 plus shipping, but we will probably give them away for free or for only the shipping to all of those Foneros who have shown that they keep their La Foneras on over time. We will make these decisions shortly.
Last minute update. A Fon team just came back from testing the Fonera that is in my window and they could get signal from 450m and connect from 370m. Clearly the Fontenna ads a whole new dimension to the Fon Movement.

Ubuntu: Linux For The Rest Of Us
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in New Ideas with No Comments
As I already mentioned, after 20 years of using Microsoft and suffering the long delays, poor architecture and frequent crashes, I gave up on Microsoft around 6 weeks ago and have been using Mac and Ubuntu.
Mac is best if you are willing to go through the retraining and can afford a Mac. Ubuntu is best if you want something with the look and feel of Windows, but that actually works super fast and does not frequently crash.

Japan Fonera

FON has management teams in the most developed countries in the world. FON is a global WiFi community that can only be built where there’s broadband, so FON operates in the countries where DSL/Cable/Fiber are most deployed.
Japan is the second largest broadband country in the world. Japan has only approx 2% of the world’s population, but 13% of the world’s broadband connections. But, because we are a Spanish company, we first started operating in Europe, then in the U.S. because of language affinity. Then , one year later we entered Japan.

Viacom and Youtube

Smart move on Viacom´s part as the video was taken down from Youtube and the show made me go to the Viacom´s Youtube like site for the first time. I guess it´s hard for geeks to go against the media industry. Still I hope Youtube wins cause as Jon Stewart says Youtube promotes the shows.

If You Pray Together, Do You Stay Together?
Published by MartinVarsavsky.net in General with No Comments
Most people in Europe are agnostic, most people in America are religious. Religious people argue that a family who prays together stays together. But evidence points otherwise. As the article shows, it turns out divorce rates in the USA are higher among families who pray together than among those who do not.
