This is my Netvibes Universe.  Basically my Netvibes Universe is a fancy way to say that you can now look at my personal Netvibes page.  Or that my Netvibes page is now “blogged”.  Why is this feature interesting? Because now you can see my sources, you can see the blogs I read, my news sources, the tools I use.  In order to make the Martinvarsavsky Netvibes Universe I did take some things out.  I my Netvibes I get my email for example, and you don´t (not that you would care to read it but I am just saying this).  But to me the Netvibes Universe is a lot of things, among them a social netvibes, my new blogroll, a way to share sources and tips.  Hope you enjoy it.

Today I went to CUTEC (Cambridge University Technology and Enterprise Club), Cambridge, where I was invited as one of this years keynote speaker.

One of the activities they organize and that I liked the most is i-Teams, which is basically a group of entrepreneurial post-graduate students who work with real inventions to determine the best route for their commercialization. They present the results at CUTEC’s annual Tech Ventures Conference. Here’s the video.

Yesterday I met with Sir Martin Sorrell and we spoke about the incredibly high market cap of Google compared to that of his company WPP, the largest ad agency in the world ($18bn compared with $160bn). During this conversation I came up with an explanation for this paradox that partly explained the enormous market cap differential of two companies in the same field with similar profits. Namely that WPP is a standard company which trades at a predictable P/E. But that there are only two kinds of companies that can achieve sky high valuations and go beyond the traditional valuation rules and those are are companies in the fields of building robots and building communities. Today at CUTEC I presented this idea at Cambridge and it was very well received.

Here´s the announcement of the Palm Foleo in Endgadget. Pls read the comments. They are very negative. People seem to focus on only one thing, the price, which at $500 they find too high. And in that sense they are right. The right price maybe more like $390. But if the Foleo was available for $390, running on Linux the key advantage of the Foleo would stand up and that is that….it runs on Linux. There are many of us who think that the what kills laptops is Microsoft. When I use Mac, or Ubuntu, my laptops work very well. When I used Microsoft I go crazy waiting for laptops to turn on, turn off, suspension never works well, programs crash on me. So the key about the Palm Foleo is that it is NOT a Microsoft laptop. In any case what I want is an Ubuntu based flashed based, very thin, with long lasting batteries, less than 1kg laptop.

More and more large Telcos are incorporating WiFi as an essential part of their strategy. Today Deutsche Telekom announced a double flatrate product in Germany “call&surf” which includes unlimited access to DT’s national WiFi Hotspot network if you buy their broadband. This will probably accelerate that FON teams up with a DT competitor since FON is the largest WiFi network in Germany by number of hotspots.

Also our partner in France, Neuf Cegetel, recently acquired Paris based WiFi network Ozone in order to make their broadband offer more attractive ahead of the FON deployment. Neuf subscribers can then use their WiFi / GSM telephones to make flatrate VoIP calls whenever they are in the reach of a WiFi signal.

I was looking at the TV Channels that Loic Le Meur built using the infrastructure of Vpod.tv and I was super impressed at how studio like quality, a one person effort can be. I also built my own TV channel but walking around with an Nokia N80 my channel is not as professional as Loic´s. Most of my films show poorly when blown up to full screen.

This week I ran into Chad Hurley of Youtube at Google Zeitgeist Europe and I mentioned to him my view that while incredibly successful and simple to use Youtube needs certain improvements to keep growing at its frantic pace. These are going multilingual, going live and greatly improving its editing tools. But talking to Chad I realized that his vision, (and who can prove him wrong as he has built the fourth most popular web site on earth?), is to keep things simple and massive. So so long as Chad is going for the Microsoft approach to video my take is that there´s room for a few Apples to grow. I have been investing in some of them as I see them very complementary to Fon the company that I founded and manage and in which Google and Skype are my investors.

Here´s some help for modern Catholics who want to stay in touch with religion while listening to their iPods. In the same site there are other interesing projects for Budhists and Jews.

We meet at conferences. Socially. Last night at the Google party we were all having fun. We invest with each other. Sometimes we negotiate against each other.

Tariq Krim, Marc Samwer, Loic Le Meur, Niklas Zennstrom, me and Brent Hoberman.

For many years I was a slave of both Microsoft and my own PC. Without Microsoft I could not compute, nor could I without my own PC. In the last 3 months I have decided to cut my bond with both, Microsoft and my own PC and so far things are working. But until today at Google Zeitgeist Europe I had not had a chance to test how well they were working. The opportunity arose because The Grove where the conference takes place is big hotel and my room is kind of far so when I left the conference center and I wanted to do some work I had a choice, go to my room and back, around 5 minutes, or stay at the conference where they have PCs and listen to Chad Hurley present Youtube. In short the choice was working on a PC that was not mine or go to my room and miss Chad. So since I am a fan of Chad (in spite of Youtube not being yet in Spanish), I decided to stay, listen to Chad and while I was doing that program one of the Lenovos that Google has for participants. So here’s the good news, that Lenovo was mine in less than 5 minutes. How? Foxmarks with all my bookmarks and username and passwords, cookies, was installed in 3 minutes. With this I could write this post for example. And then Gspace that has all my spreadsheets, docs, spreadsheets, family pictures, favorite songs, videos, was installed in 2 minutes so I had access to all my stuff. And Gmail of course was up there in an instant giving me my Fon email and the Gmail archives of my mail and google talk which is now integrated in Gmail. And that’s all I needed, in 5 minutes I had made the Lenovo mine. If I hadn’t been multitasking I could probably had done it in 3 minutes. And I remember the time when a new Windows PC would take 5 hours to configure. Chad was great btw, he showed a video of an octogenarian who is (yes) a star on Youtube.
