{"id":6,"date":"2005-03-02T12:58:17","date_gmt":"2005-03-02T10:58:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/192.168.1.2\/en\/?p=6"},"modified":"2020-04-22T18:16:51","modified_gmt":"2020-04-22T16:16:51","slug":"my-biography","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/english.martinvarsavsky.net\/?p=6","title":{"rendered":"My Biography"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Martin Varsavsky is an Argentine\/Spanish entrepreneur, founder of seven companies over the course of his career.<\/p>\n<p>In 1984, while still in college, Varsavsky started his first business, Urban Capital Corporation, one of the early leaders of the loft movement in downtown Manhattan. This was soon followed in 1986 by<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.medicorp.com\/main\/index.php\">Medicorp Services<\/a>, a Canadian biotechnology company, a pioneer in AIDS and PSA testing. His third business,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.viatel.com\/\">Viatel Ltd<\/a>., Varsavsky\u2019s first venture into the world of telecom, was founded in 1990. This company is best known for inventing call back and building the first pan European fiber optic network ahead of liberalization. Martin Varsavsky\u2019s best-known ventures were founded during the last decade. In 1998, he started<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.jazztel.com\/english\/inversores\/index.php\">Jazz Telecomunicaciones<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Jazztel), Spain\u2019s second largest publicly traded telecom operator. In 1999 he founded<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.ya.com\/\">Ya.com<\/a>, Spain\u2019s third largest internet web site\/DSL provider that includes the second largest Spanish language web agency www.viajar.com. But not all of MV\u2019s companies were successful. In 2000, he started Germany\u2019s leading cloud computing company, Einsteinet, and the company was sold in 2003 at no return to him or investors.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Varsavsky is currently the larger shareholder and Chairman of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Fon\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/corp.fon.com\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fon<\/a>. With over 18 million hotspots, Fon is the largest WiFi network in the world. The company is headquartered in Madrid, Spain but its customers are worldwide, in Asia, Europe and the USA. Its investors include<span>\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Atomico\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.atomico.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atomico<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.bt.com\/\">British Telecom<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.coralcm.com\/\">Coral Group<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a title=\"Skype\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.skype.com\/intl\/en\/home\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Skype<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.google.com\/\">Google<\/a>, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.indexventures.com\/\">Index Ventures.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>His current venture is<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/preludefertility.com\/\">Prelude<\/a>, a company that wants to help people have healthy babies whenever they are ready. The Prelude method consists of 4 steps: freeze eggs and sperm when you are young, create embryos, test embryos for genetic deseases with PGD\/PGS and transfer the healthiest embryo to have a healthy child.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Varsavsky manages the Varsavsky Foundation and is best known as the founder of two large educational projects in Latin America \u2013<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.educ.ar\/\">Educ.ar<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Argentina) and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.educarchile.cl\/\">EducarChile<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>(Chile), and the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.safe-democracy.org\/\">Safe Democracy Foundation<\/a>. Martin was Ambassador at Large of Argentina from 2001 to 2005. He is also on the Board of Trustees of the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.clintonfoundation.org\/\">William Jefferson Clinton Foundation<\/a>, and is a board member of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.ie.edu\/\">Instituto de Empresa<\/a>, Spain\u2019s leading business school, where he taught entrepreneurship for eight years. Since 2012\u00a0he teaches\u00a0entrepreneurship at<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/https:\/\/sipa.columbia.edu\/\">Columbia University<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.stern.nyu.edu\/\">New York University<\/a>. In 2014 he joined the Supervisory Board of<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/axelspringer.de\/\">Axel Springer<\/a>, the largest media company in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Varsavsky has written numerous articles on business and international relations that have been published in several international publications including<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.elpais.com\/\">El Pais<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/\">Newsweek<\/a>. He is also a frequent speaker at conferences around the world and an active blogger. He is the recipient of various honors and rewards.<\/p>\n<p>Martin Varsavsky received his BA from<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.nyu.edu\/\">New York University<\/a>, and holds a MA in International Affairs and a MA in Business Administration from<span>\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20181001220615\/http:\/\/www.columbia.edu\/\">Columbia University<\/a>.
