Om Malik is giving away Foneras (FON WiFi routers with 2 SSIDs) for free. These normally sell for $29,95. Click here if you live in the States and would like to get a free Fonera. You won´t even have to pay for shipping, just give your word that you will connect it or give it back to the community.

My apologies for readers outside the US, but we have ran free promos in most countries and we are doing the US last and in very limited format cause its so damn big!!!

Hi Martín,

Is the giveaway only for the US? It seems to be.

It would be great if I was able to get one to put in my local bar here in Dublin.

Hea Martín,

Thats great. Thanks alot. I’ll have to work extra hard explaining Fon to everyone I know. 😉

You know, if you want to go to the encierro this year, I’d be more than happy to show you around.

You know where to get me!

I know you like asados, and there are plenty of churrascorias in the north.

Bueno, gracias otra vez,

Has FON considered moving to do a P2P software-only model, one which does not require users to buy any hardware? You could then stop having to manufacture and give away free routers, and you can have the same functionality as today. It is fairly easy to do under the major OSs.

William: Availability and network reach is the main problem in this proyect. If it’s already hard to force people to keep their router online, don’t even think about having the “fonero” computers working 24/7.

Just my 2 cents.

Yes William, we have. But there are many functionalities that FON has that we cannot figure out how to do in a P2P environment. We don´t believe giving other people access to all your WiFi network is reasonable, we believe that the 2 SSID environment that we created is better, one with WPA the other one public, but with bandwidth control.
