iPhone? iFon!

If you have a liberated iPhone you can now go to Installer, Network and install iFon. iFon is an app that autoconnects you to Fon so if you are moving around areas that are heavily populated with Fonspots your iPhone begins to treat WiFi as if it were Mobile disconnecting and autoconnecting from Fonspot to Fonspot. While the process of connecting and disconnecting is worse than that of mobile networks the throughput that you get is much greater and is free.

  2. Hi Martin, I know you don’t like Microsoft software like windows mobile,
and sorry about going a little off topic here, what about the
pocket pc users ? there are problems with the login page and
registration via those devices, please take a look at the fon english
    board ( http://boards.fon.com/viewtopic.php?t=3822 ).

People using pocket pc can’t use the 15 minutes trial, can’t register
as foneros, there should be one small login and registration page just
    for mobile devices.

Fon is losing hundreds of potential users because of the lack of support
to pocket pcs devices, please help us pocket pc users.

    best regards

  3. Paulo, we have already started development for a FON Connection Manager running on Windows Mobile, the one for iPhone was easier to release because there is just one platform, the iPhone, and one OS version, with Mobile Windows is taking us a little longer because there are several platforms and different versions of Windows Mobile. Rest assured we will soon have that client out too so Windows Mobile Foneros can also log in to FON as smoothly as all iPhone Foneros are doing today.

  5. Jordi, what will be the minimal requirements for the Windows Mobile client?
As far as I know there are only 4 different versions out there:
    Windows 2003
    Windows 2003se
    Windows 5
    Windows 6

    Most will only support WM5/WM6 hence wifi is addreseable using the microsoft sdk;
but for windows 2003/2003a you have to licence a wifi stack… (i currently have such a device… uptill recently Devicescape functioned untill it went to wm5+) …

another solution is to just create a “bookmark”… in theory not very secure hence the password is send in cleartext…

  6. does the program have to be opened all the time until i am connected, so that i have to run it again when i am losing the signal or will it run in the background and connect me automatically when i get in range of another fon spot?

  7. Hi Steven, fully agree with you, we are targeting WM5 and 6 using WISPr-based FON Connection Manager.

  8. Hi,

Will this app suck my battery dry while running? is there a process i can kill with ulctl? How exactly does it work?
    Thx for help!

    Kind regards!

  9. Paul you can close the app when you are connected. Now iFon doesn’t run in the background.

randomchoice, iFon doesn’t use any background daemon. In automatic mode it performs a scan for wifi signals every 10 secs until it connects to a fonspot

  10. hi victor, thanx for your answer.
…so that means that i need to open the program in order to scan for wireless spots. once connected i close the program and can access wifi/internet use my safari and mail. while the program is closed and i am leaving the current fon spot i am not reconnected automatically. i need to reopen the program in order to get a new wireless connection…
i thought the idea of this program was that one can hop from fon spot to fon spot without looking for a connection all the time, connecting automatically from the background. is there an easy way to modify the tool to function that way?
devicescape will let you hop from wifi to wifi spot flawlessly. but i am still refusing to give them my private login data….
    thanx for answering!
    regards

  14. If i previously was/still connected to an Wlan where i set an static IP, an then i use the iFon Tool on my iPod Touch, it although is connecting to this FON Spot, but it takes the static IP from this previously Network, and dont uses the DHCP.

  16. Nice tool, but it doesn’t work anymore! Everytime I am in installer I get the message: download package failed. And I was about to travel, hence the ifon connector would have come in so handy!

  17. Hi Michi, latest versions of Installer app seems to work weirdly

Please try upgrading or reinstalling the Installer app and then upgrade the Community sources package. It should work

  19. Thanks Beatus, we will try on 1.1.4. Our last release worked up to 1.1.3 and it might need some twitching so it does on the new 1.1.4 too.

  20. I’ve an iPhone 1.1.4 and when i try to launch iFon it tells: “Configuration empty You have to enter your FON credentials” and if i click ok it quits. Maybe there’s a problem with 1.1.4 firmware like mobile and root accounts?
    Thanks
