This is How Foneras Look With More Powerful Antennas.
We are considering having all Foneras come with these antennas so that FON Access Points can double their coverage. For the time being, these antennas are sold separately in the FON Shop.

Hi Martin,
I am sure that you are aware that regulations limit the maximum EIRP that an RF device can output, and this is checked during certification and production (one of the pictures from the production line you posted is of the RF testing performed inside Faraday boxes).
Placing an antenna or amplifier that takes the device above the maximum EIRP is not legal. Can you be caught? Unlikely, as normal routers barely reach the street as it is, so you will only gain a marginal advantage with the omni antenna you show here.

Is the higher gain antenna available in US? It’s not in the US shop on web site. Also wondering what the gain is - and will anyone ever bring up EMF issues with this sort of antenna.

The antenna has a gain of 8dBi and all the technical specs are in the FON shop. This is not available in the US Shop yet, but we are working to have it as soon as possible.

O Linksys WRT54G/WRT54GL/WRt54GS, quando usando firmware FONbasic, e as antenas originais, já ultrapassa os 20 dBm legais. O firmware vem configurado para emitir 19 dBm e as antenas possuem ganho individual de 2 dBi, o que resulta em 21 dBm. Ou seja, ‘La fonera’ anterior já era ilegal.
O uso destas antenas de alto ganho, com 8 dBi, provavelmente também irá ultrapassar o permitido pelas legislações norte-americana e européia. Em suma,’La Fonera’ é ilegal.E perigoso, pelo excesso de irradiação! 18 dBm + 8 dBi representam 26 dBm, que é o mesmo que 400 mW. É muita radiação para quem esteja nas proximidades.
Para se ampliar o alcance de ‘La Fonera’ deve-se pensar em outras soluções. Eu mantenho uma comunidade no Orkut, no qual cito sugestões para ampliar o alcance de ‘La Fonera’.
