Napster failed because it was centralized. FON is centralized. Do you see a bitTorrent-like wifi anywhere?

In fact, fon and ISPs match nicely. One of the key reasons for me to get a new fast DSL connection in my home office was to have an open WiFi hotspot for all my friends coming over with their laptops.

Many existing ISP contracts exclude explicitly the reselling of the DSL connection. Ultimately they will change this policy and allow any private or commercial reuse of their connection although it might mean that this new multi-user customer consumes many many GBs.

That's what we call ubiquitous digital lifestyle.

Ezra,

We are in the process of trying to reach the top managers at all the relevant ISPs and explain to them how they can improve their offer and make more money if they add free wifi roaming to their features. If you have any leads please pass them on to me at martin@fon.es

Regards,

They are just mad because they didn't think of it. Have you talked to Comcast? They are pretty much the ruling ISP here in the southeast USA.
