I’ve been told about this interesting open source project (article in Spanish) with La Fonera. It consists of an alarm that is activated via an RF emitter (of the kind that are used to open garage doors) and sends an SMS to a mobile number of your choice.
It can be useful for elderly people in need of assistance or shop owners who want to alert someone of a robbery.
The only equipment needed is an RF emitter, a receiver and a Fonera with the OpenWrt firmware.

I have one observation to make. I personally think FON is a great idea and eventually it has the potential to be part of many people’s daily life. In oder to reach that stage, customer service is no doubt a very key element of success. Unfortunately I am not seeing that is a feature of FON and in truth it is a big draw back, I have emailed your CS for help and now I have waited for 3 days, nothing happened but an auto- reply.
I do heope that some more attention and resources can be allocated to bring the customer service up to speed. FON will go no where if this cannot be fixed.
