Foneras are Open Source

Lately some people have been complaining that we have not disclosed the code of the Fonera. We have not done so because we have just launched the Fonera and are still working on the GPL compliance with Atheros, the chip maker. We are sorry about this delay and will probably publish the source code within a month Also we invite developers to write code for the Foneras and after certification we will include it as a choice for people to add to them.

  1. I just can hope that the certification will be faster than the support…

  2. Does this mean you are currently distributing your firmware in violation of the original OpenWrt (and other) GPLs?

  3. So why having lock the SSH and firwmare update ? afraid that people go for a free-for-all solution with la fonera ?

I can’t see how you want to be “open” and ship such blackBox …

No, it does not mean that. We have notified the GPL people and told them that we have the delay and they said its ok. They accept our explanation and that we will release the code in November.

  5. This is the kind of things why I hesitate to become a fonero :
You say “We have notified the GPL people [..]”
Very interesting… what about the foneros and the will be foneros ?
You are claiming that FON’s power commes from its community but it looks like there is a strong communication problem between FON and the community.

And, I’m not a lawyer, but I don’t think that “notifying the GPL people” is enough. And even if Atheros have not given it’s OK for it’s code (a WiFi driver I suppose), you can show the rest of the code (I immagine it’s a modified/optimised OpenWRT).

  8. Hi,

The posts here seem to date back to the year 2006.
And I am still unable to download any sources at the URL: http://www.fon.com/en/download
I also checked the posts made in November and December 2006 and there were no news
    regarding that issue.

As far as I got this, no matter who you notified, this was and still is a GPL violation.

but it’ll be useless to you. Fon is opensource in the same way that Tivo is opensource. This is exactly why the gpl v3 came about.Don’t use signed images, or at least give us the means to bypass this requirement.
